The Power Of Affirmations

The Power of Affirmations

How we speak to ourselves, how we think on ourselves has a lot of power and influence over the life we lead and the reality we create around us. A negative mindset can aid in the creation of an immediate reality that is not a true reflection of our inner and pure self.

Affirmations are positive vocabulary that we speak within and outside of ourselves. Positive language that stops the negative cycle of repeated and demeaning language used during our internal dialogue. Words that we speak to ourselves, often become beliefs. What we say about ourselves, good and otherwise, becomes who we are & who we perceive ourselves to be.

On a low day, the language we use to describe ourselves and our situations is often less than desirable. As our internal dialogue is created to reflect that of our external reality. And, while some of you may think that this is automated language, it isn’t. Rather, it doesn’t have to be. Catching the negative thought as it happens and shifting it out in replacement of a much more positive one, will not only change your mood…but your reality too.

Yes, this does take practice and will require you to be aware of your thoughts and external dialogue. Yet, the process of repetition will have you training your brain, until the training will become second nature. Positive affirmations are an amazing life skill and asset to have and use. With regular use, you will see how much of your own personal energy is shifted to a place of positivity. This shift will have continued ramifications on your external reality too!

  • “I am open to receiving and giving love”

The Psychological Theory Behind Positive Affirmations

‘One of the key psychological theories behind positive affirmations is self-affirmation theory (Steele, 1988). So, yes, there are empirical studies based on the idea that we can maintain our sense of self-integrity by telling ourselves (or affirming) what we believe in positive ways.

Very briefly, self-integrity relates to our global self-efficacy—our perceived ability to control moral outcomes and respond flexibly when our self-concept is threatened (Cohen & Sherman, 2014). So, we as humans are motivated to protect ourselves from these threats by maintaining our self-integrity.’  – Positive Psychology
