Mistletoe: The Magic, Essence & Story

Linked with Christmas & known traditionally as a symbol of this magical time of year. You may have known of the tradition to kiss underneath a sprig of mistletoe during the holidays, or perhaps you’ve even partaken in the occasion yourself. And, while it’s not entirely clear how that tradition came to be, it’s still clear that mistletoe has been long-linked to Christmas time.

Pliny the Elder, a first-century Roman Historian refers to mistletoe;

“The druids – that is what they call their magicians – hold nothing more sacred than the mistletoe and a tree on which it is growing, provided it is Valonia Oak…. Mistletoe is rare and when found it is gathered with great ceremony, and particularly on the sixth day of the moon….Hailing the moon in a native word that means ‘healing all things,’ they prepare a ritual sacrifice and banquet beneath a tree and bring up two white bulls, whose horns are bound for the first time on this occasion. A priest arrayed in white vestments climbs the tree and, with a golden sickle, cuts down the mistletoe, which is caught in a white cloak. Then finally they kill the victims, praying to a god to render his gift propitious to those on whom he has bestowed it. They believe that mistletoe given in drink will impart fertility to any animal that is barren and that it is an antidote to all poisons.”  – Source

Mistletoe Properties

Symbolically, mistletoe is a sign of peace, romance, fertility, vitality, and has wonderful healing properties. Linked way back to the Celtic Druids, whom were perhaps the first to have used it as a festive decoration.

More so, it also relates to renewal, hope, friendship. This comes from it growing from Oak trees even in the cold of winter. Which is also perhaps why it was so revered by the ancient druids, showing such beauty, growth and life, while in amongst everything else has turned dormant.

Mistletoe is a wonderful festive addition to be hung around the home anytime of the year.

  • Burning – to cleanse & banish unwanted and negative energy
  • Hung above the bed to rid unwanted dreams
  • Worn/Carried – for protection

Caution – Mistletoe is toxic & therefore shouldn’t ever be ingested.
