History
Amethyst occurs naturally within Volcanic Rock, and has been traced back as far as 3000 BC to archaeological digs and various Egyptian Pharaoh tombs & artefacts:
- ‘The tomb of Djer, (the second Pharaoh of Egypt’s 1st Dynasty). With the discovery of beaded bracelets.
- The tomb of Tutankhamen (the Boy-King) which listed a bracelet inset with a large amethyst scarab.
- While another prominent fine was in the tomb of Queen Mereret, (the Beloved One). With the discovery of heart scarabs, as well as an anklet of amethyst beads and gold.’ – Bruce Barnwell
Ancient Greece
The history of Amethyst has also been linked with the Ancient Greek god Dionysus, and some herald this god as the creator of the crystal. It became believed that amethyst could be used as a tool for protecting one from intoxication.
Many drinking vessels from the period were either carved out of amethyst or adorned with the crystal in aid of this belief. Amethyst derives its name from the Greek word ametusthos which means ‘not intoxicated’.
The meaning and uses have varied throughout the years and across cultures, and is why the Feng Shui meaning differs from that of the Greek beliefs, to one of wealth, energy clearing, & protection.
Ancient Tibet
